Case Study: Building the evidence base for the impact of hospital design on patient outcomes

Problem

A large building services and engineering company had developed technologies to customize the hospital environment. They needed to understand the evidence base for these interventions on health outcomes in order to tailor their offerings to hospital customers.

Solution

  • Medis Consulting conducted a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of the data supporting environmental management and it’s impact on patient outcomes
  • The SLR was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar and expanded to include design and environmental psychology literature.
  • We identified over 1,400 citations, of which almost 400 were included in second pass review, and provided 75 key articles to support their marketing efforts.

Outcome

  • The client discovered a surprisingly robust literature base supporting their technology.
  • Medis provided concrete recommendations not only to support the literature base, but to further their promotional efforts overall.
  • The client continues to work with us on reimbursement and promotional support for this innovative program.
